So they are in a uniform, but do they have to conform?
You have got to love little kids!! They just don’t care – they say what they want, do what they want, and rarely show much remorse. They show the full range of emotions, often within a space of ten minutes, and they sleep like angels at night. It is almost as though they are born with a mantra, “Well here I am life, what have you got for me?”
This approach often changes when they go to school. No longer can they have their outbursts (they save these for home!), and no longer can they free range around the classroom. There are rules, and procedures, and there is work to be done. No wonder they are exhausted!! But what I really love, is that there is always one character in the class who will not be beaten – they will fight the system, hammer and tong, and still come back for more!
It is these great characters that I channel into my readers, and it is these great characters that the children absolutely love to read about. Their outrageous and shocking behaviour is met with utter disbelief, and then appears a little grin. “You go boy,” is what they quietly think, “if only I could do that!!”
And so, I present to you, the following ‘in your face without a care’ characters – Ted (from the Patch Dogs Series), Melvin (from the Max Series), and Jack, pictured with Jessie, (from the Jack and Jessie Series). You will find them in the Year One Collection.
In or out of uniform, they refuse to conform! The kids love them, and so do I!
PS Next time, I’ll introduce you to the outrageous girls, leading the way – can’t wait for you to meet them!!
