Imperfection, somehow equals Perfection

I love my job!! Working with young children is so rewarding and it is also very, very grounding!!
For years, I have been sharing stories about imagined characters with the Kindy Kids. They loved the stories, and through their questions and comments, have helped shape their characters.
Over Christmas, I decided to record these stories and illustrate them. I then showed them to the Kindy Kids. I had envisaged them ignoring the limitations of my drawings, and responding, with squeals of delight, some of the following, I felt would have been most appropriate:
“Oh they’re so cute!” “I love the Rainbow Pigs” “Toad and Freddy are the best!”
And my favourite, “Oh, you’re such a good drawer!!”
But no. Admittedly there was lots of squealing, but that was due to the laughter that erupted!
The responses were brutally honest, harsh, I would say:
“What is that? Is that Percy? I thought he was fatter. Where is his watch?”
“Is that Toad’s cousin? He looks a different colour.”
And let’s just say, the Patch Dogs, rather rudely declared Cow Dogs, were momentarily shelved.
However, after the initial critiquing of said characters, the Kindy Kids were immersed in the stories – after all, these characters had been with them for a long time, and they had come to know and love them. I watched their delight and excitement, as they read along with the stories, and then, oh so proudly, took their very own copy, home to share with Mum and Dad.
All has been forgiven!
